BEAC Waste Management

3R’s Project in UBD

In March 2007, the Brunei Environment Action (BEAC) team of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) had implemented the 3R’s project. The 3R’s project is about reduced, recycle and reuse.
Recently, BEAC team of UBD received three recycling skips. The recycling skips are provided by a local company, Syarikat Metussin. The recycling skips provided by the company are for papers, plastics and aluminum cans.At this moment, the recycling skips are located at a very strategic location, Central Lecture Theater (CLT). According to Dr. Irene, there are more skips to come and these skips will be located at strategic locations that have been decided by all the team members during the meeting. Added Dr. Irene, the company will pay for the items that they collect. For one kilogram of aluminum cans they will pay $1.50, plastics for $0.05 whereas for papers they will pay $0.10 per kilogram.

The main aim of the 3R’s project in UBD is to educate the staffs as well as the undergraduates and at the same time to the public about the importance of conserving the environment. By educating these people from the early years can actually help them to learn to recycle, reuse and reduce the items that are mention above just now.

For the public information, by recycling one ton of paper we are able to save17 trees; 5.6 cubic meters of landfill space; 32,000 litres of water; 4200kWh of electricity and 3516 of watt-hour energy. As for one ton of plastic, we are able to save enough energy to light up a 60W light bulb for 6 hours and as we know plastics are non-biodegradable, that mean they take 100’s or 1000’s of years to breakdown.

For one ton of aluminum recycled, we can save natural resources that are depleting. Making new aluminum cans from use cans takes 95% less energy than from aluminum ore; recycling 1 aluminum can saves enough energy to keep 100W bulb burning for almost 4 hours or runs your television for 3 hours.

To educate people, the BEAC team designed a pamphlet and posters which will be distributed at the near future. Apart from that, the team also designed stickers which will be pasted at the photocopying machines and printers throughout UBD. The logo will help the users with instructions to print on both sides and to reuse the papers if the papers are printed on one side.
